B.J. Hill won't be on the field when Bengals camp opens
Training camp is supposed to be the fresh start. For B.J. Hill, it's beginning on the sideline.
Hill is a defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals — one of the players up front whose job is to collapse the pocket and make life hard on opposing offenses. He came into this offseason as part of a defense the Bengals are counting on to hold things together. That makes what happened next matter more than a paperwork move.
The Bengals placed Hill on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list as camp opened, meaning he is not medically cleared to practice. He won't be out there with his teammates when the work begins.
For a defensive lineman, training camp is where you build the conditioning and timing that carries you through a long season. Missing that time isn't something you fully get back. The question now is how much of it Hill will miss — and what shape he'll be in when he does return.
He's not the only one sitting this opening stretch out. Tight end Josh Kattus was placed on the Non-Football Injury list the same day. But it's Hill's absence that hits the depth chart harder. The Bengals will find out quickly how much ground they can cover without him.
