Quarterback · Arizona Cardinals
Carson Beck
No. 19 · Rookie
Carson Beck picked a number. He's still learning what the other one meant.
He's heading into his NFL career wearing No. 19. Simple enough. But when the subject of No. 11 came up, Carson Beck said something that takes a little nerve to say out loud: he doesn't really know much about Johnny Unitas beyond the fact that the man is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Beck is a rookie quarterback stepping into a new city, a new system, and a new set of numbers. The jersey he can't wear — No. 11 — carries a weight that predates him by decades, tied in franchise lore to Larry Fitzgerald, one of the most beloved players the team has ever known.
The honest answer Beck gave — I know he's a Hall of Famer, not much else — is the kind of thing a lot of young players probably think and few actually say. He's not pretending to know things he doesn't.
That's either a good sign or a homework assignment. Probably both.
