Charbonnet starts camp on the sideline, still working back from a playoff injury

The Seattle Seahawks opened training camp this week, and Zach Charbonnet was not on the field. He was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list — a designation for players who are still recovering from injury and cannot yet practice — as he continues to heal from a torn ACL.

Charbonnet is a running back for the Seahawks, and the timing of his injury makes it harder to sit with: he tore his ACL in the divisional round of the playoffs. Not in a regular-season game that faded from memory. In the moment that mattered most, in the deepest the team had gone in years.

ACL tears are long roads. Most players who go through them spend the better part of a year rebuilding before they can practice at full speed again. Being unavailable at the start of camp is not unusual at this stage — but it means Charbonnet is watching the first days of a new season from a distance, waiting for a body that isn't ready yet.

He'll get back. But right now, the question isn't whether he can play — it's how much of this year he'll have to watch before he can.
