Cut, then called back — Hayes is still in the building

There is a version of this that ends on cutdown day. Hayes gets the call, clears out his locker, and that's that.

Hayes is in his second year with the New York Jets, signed again before training camp this summer to compete for a spot along the offensive line. Depth linemen live in a particular kind of uncertainty — they do the work, take the reps, and then wait for a roster that has limited room to decide whether they make it or not.

The Jets released Hayes when the roster had to come down to its final cuts. Then, a few days later, they brought him back on the practice squad — the secondary roster where teams keep players they want to develop and have available without committing a full active spot.

For Hayes, it is not the outcome he was working toward, but it is not the end either. He is still in the facility, still in the program, still number 77 in a Jets uniform.

Practice squad spots can turn into active roster spots quickly — injuries happen, things change. Hayes knows that. He's been here before.
