Denzel Ward just did it again — and that number says plenty

Some players reach the top of the market once and hold on. Denzel Ward has now gotten there twice.

Ward has been the cornerback the Cleveland Browns have built around for years — a player who earned his first big payday and then, when the league caught up and the market moved, found himself in position to reset it again. That kind of back-to-back validation doesn't happen by accident.

He and the Browns agreed to a two-year extension worth $62.2 million, with $52.3 million of that guaranteed. At just over $31 million per season, Ward edges past Trent McDuffie, Sauce Gardner, and Derek Stingley Jr. to sit at the very top of the cornerback pay scale — the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL.

For a franchise that doesn't always have the brightest things to talk about, keeping their best corner and paying him what he's worth is a real statement. Ward isn't going anywhere, and the Browns paid to make sure of it.

The league will catch up again eventually. It always does. The question is whether Ward will be standing at the top when it does.
