Deven Eastern's rookie year is already running behind schedule

He hasn't played a snap yet, and the path to doing so just got longer.

Deven Eastern came in as a rookie defensive tackle trying to earn a spot on the Seattle Seahawks roster. That kind of fight is hard enough when everything goes right. Eastern spent much of the team's offseason practice sessions and mandatory spring sessions on the sideline with an injury, and now the Seahawks have placed him on the active physically-unable-to-perform list — a designation that means he continues to miss practice while the rest of the roster builds toward the season.

For a player who has no previous games in the NFL to point to, time lost in these early months is genuinely costly. Coaches are forming their opinions now. Depth charts are taking shape. Eastern has been absent for most of it.

He still has a path. Players can come off that list once they are healthy. But the margin for a rookie trying to make a final roster is slim under normal conditions, and these have not been normal conditions. He is watching from the outside while others establish themselves inside.
