Jadeveon Clowney

No. 42 · 13th season

Eleven years later, Clowney walks back through the same door

The number one pick in the whole 2014 draft. That is where Jadeveon Clowney's story started — Houston, a city that bet everything on him before he had played a single professional snap. What followed was a long, winding career that took him through several franchises and more than a few quiet questions about what he still had left.

Most recently he was in Dallas, where he put together an 8.5-sack season with the Cowboys — a number that tends to quiet the doubters. He stayed in Texas, it turns out. Just moved cities.

Now he has agreed to return to Houston, the organization that drafted him first overall over a decade ago. The team that started the whole thing. There is something almost circular about it — a player who spent years moving on from that original moment, coming back to stand in the same city that first called his name.

For Clowney, this is a chance to close a loop that has been open since he was twenty-one years old. For Houston, it is a reunion with someone they once believed in more than anyone. Whether that original faith and this late-career chapter end up telling the same story — that part is still being written.
