Wide Receiver · San Francisco 49ers

Mike Evans

No. 5 · 13th season

Evans sits out practice, but the 49ers' receiver room had already been taking hits

A quad strain isn't usually the kind of thing that keeps a seasoned receiver up at night. For Mike Evans, reports suggest it should clear up relatively quickly — and that matters, because this one is more about timing than severity.

Evans came to San Francisco as a veteran presence, the kind of player a receiver room is supposed to lean on when things get rocky. The problem is, things have already gotten rocky. Several wide receivers on the 49ers have been banged up early in training camp, and the depth chart is thinner than anyone wanted before the season even starts.

One more body on the sideline — even briefly — keeps the heat on a group that hasn't had a clean week yet. Evans is expected back, but until he is, the room has one less experienced voice to steady it.

The clock on quad strains can be short. Whether the rest of this corps heals on the same schedule is the part nobody knows yet.
