Outside Linebacker · Carolina Panthers

Nic Scourton

No. 11 · 2nd season

First day of camp. First play of the rest of it.

Training camp is supposed to be the start of everything. For Nic Scourton, the Carolina Panthers' first day of the summer became the last day before a very different kind of year.

Scourton had been one of the names people around the Panthers were watching — a young outside linebacker the team considered a real piece of what they were building. He left practice with a right knee injury, and by the afternoon the MRI had confirmed what the training staff feared: a torn ACL. The season hadn't started. It was already over.

Coach Dave Canales didn't speculate when asked. There wasn't much to add.

A torn ACL means surgery, then roughly a year of rebuilding the knee from scratch — not just the physical repair, but the long process of trusting it again. For a young player still trying to establish himself, the timing lands hard. The moment he was building toward is now a full year away.

Whatever Scourton was going to show this season, we'll have to wait to see it.
