Gardner-Johnson says a GM's friend cost him his job in Houston

He got cut. That much is plain. What Gardner-Johnson added was the part that sticks: the reason he was released by the Houston Texans, he says, was a confrontation with someone close to the team's general manager.

Gardner-Johnson is a safety known for playing with an edge — physical, vocal, the kind of player who tends to make things uncomfortable for the other team, and sometimes for the people around him. How much context the Texans' front office had for what happened, and how much patience they had for it, is not something that came out neatly on either side.

The timing has its own shape. Houston started that season 0-3 and looked like a team in trouble. By the end, they nearly reached the AFC Championship. Gardner-Johnson was not on the roster for any of it — released before the turnaround began.

If his version of events is accurate, his career took a detour not because of what he did on the field but because of a personal connection that ran right through the front office. That is a hard thing to carry. Harder still to watch a team you were part of almost go all the way.
