Jonathan Greenard

No. 58 · 7th season

Greenard opens his first Eagles camp watching from the sideline

He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles to rush the passer, to make noise. Instead, Jonathan Greenard is starting camp on the physically unable to perform list — the designated spot for players who cannot practice while they heal — with a pec strain keeping him off the field before a single rep has been taken.

Greenard came to Philadelphia as someone the team believed could help transform their defensive line. The details of his path here are thin in what's reported, but the expectation attached to his arrival was real.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said Wednesday that the strain is not a long-term concern. That's the good news. The less certain news: defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said it's an open question whether Greenard will practice at all during training camp.

For a player trying to learn a new system and build chemistry with new teammates, the weeks ahead matter more than just getting healthy. You can rehab a muscle. You can't easily make up the reps.

Greenard will get back on the field. The question is whether training camp will still be there when he does.
