Gutekunst says Love now reads the game like a coach does

There is a version of learning that happens in film rooms, in the quiet before everyone else arrives. Jordan Love has found his way into that version.

Love is heading into his fourth year running the Green Bay Packers offense — still young by quarterback standards, still building. Along the way he picked up a habit from Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback whose shadow he spent years standing in. Rodgers was known for arriving early, staying late, and treating preparation as something close to obsession.

Packer general manager Brian Gutekunst put words to what he is seeing now: Love's understanding of the game has grown to the level of a coach's. Gutekunst was careful to note that this kind of leap happens for many quarterbacks as they settle into a system and a role — it is a known arc. But knowing an arc exists and watching someone actually reach it are two different things.

Four years in, Love is no longer learning the job. He is starting to own it.
