Heisman finalist, undrafted, signed — and gone before training camp starts

There are long shots, and then there's Diego Pavia's path to the NFL. He finished among the top Heisman Trophy candidates in the country — the award given to the best college player in the sport — and still heard his name pass in every round of the draft without being picked. The Baltimore Ravens signed him anyway, a three-year deal as an undrafted free agent, which felt like the beginning of something.

Pavia played his college ball at Vanderbilt, a program not exactly known for producing first-round quarterbacks, which made his Heisman run all the more striking. Getting to Baltimore was the reward for beating the odds once.

He didn't make it to training camp. The Ravens waived him before those sessions even opened, leaving him available for any team to claim. The NFL, the Canadian Football League, the United Football League — even, per some corners of the internet, professional wrestling — are all listed as possibilities now.

What stings is the timing. He wasn't cut because he failed a tryout or fell behind on a depth chart. He was let go before he got the chance to do either. The door isn't closed, but right now it's at least swung mostly shut — and Pavia has to find the next one.
