Joey Porter Jr. starts camp on the sideline
The offseason is supposed to be when you build momentum. For Joey Porter Jr., it is starting with a setback instead.
Porter has been one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' most physically gifted cornerbacks — long, aggressive, and built for press coverage. He was expected to be a cornerstone of the defense heading into 2026.
But when training camp opened, Porter was not on the field with his teammates. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list, meaning an injury or physical condition is keeping him from practicing for now.
Missing camp matters more than it sounds. This is when depth charts take shape, when chemistry with new teammates gets built, when a player makes a case for a bigger role. Every day off the field is a day someone else is making that case instead.
The question is how long this lasts — and whether he can pick up where he left off once he returns.
