Josh Sweat can't practice yet — and the Cardinals need him on the field

Before camp could really start, the Arizona Cardinals already had a list of players who wouldn't be on the field. Josh Sweat was one of them.

Sweat came to Arizona as a pass rusher who'd spent years building a reputation as a reliable edge presence. Whatever brought him to this team, the expectation was that he'd be a piece of something new.

Instead, he's beginning camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list — a designation that means a player is hurt enough to be kept off the practice field entirely. He's not alone; cornerback Garrett Williams, left tackle Paris Johnson Jr., and tight end Tip Reiman are all in the same spot. But for Sweat, it's a quiet, unhappy way to open a chapter he was supposed to help write.

The Cardinals need those players healthy and working together. Every day of practice missed is a day the new pieces don't fit.

The PUP list isn't the end of anything. Players come off it. But Sweat won't get that time back, and right now, nobody's saying when he will.
