Kyle Pitts and the Falcons found their number
Three years, $54 million. That is not a team hedging its bets on a tight end — that is a team saying it believes.
Kyle Pitts arrived in Atlanta as one of the most anticipated tight ends in recent memory, a player whose combination of size and movement made scouts reach for superlatives. The years since that entry haven't been a straight line. Injuries interrupted the arc, and what looked like a sure thing started to feel more complicated.
So this deal matters in a specific way. It is the Falcons deciding, clearly and expensively, that the complicated middle part of the story is not the last word.
For Pitts, it means security and a mandate at once. The Falcons have put real money behind what they think he can still become — which is both a vote of confidence and a new kind of pressure.
What he does with a full, healthy season and this contract in hand is the thing worth watching now.
