Mac Jones had spent his time with the San Francisco 49ers behind Brock Purdy, one of the more daunting places to stand in the league. When Purdy went down during the 2025 season, Jones stepped into the lineup and had the kind of run that changes what people expect from you going forward.

Nobody hands you a breakout. You have to earn it in circumstances that weren't supposed to be yours. Jones did that.

Now the question is what he does with it. A player who proves himself in a fill-in role still has to prove it was real — that it holds when the spotlight stays on.
