Penix is sitting out the team work — but says he'll be ready when it counts
There is a version of this offseason where every rep matters. Then there is the version Michael Penix Jr. is living right now.
Penix came into this year carrying real weight. He is the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback — a position the franchise spent a lot of faith, and a first-round pick, to hand him. Expectations don't get lighter from there.
For now, though, he won't be taking part in the team's 11-on-11 practice sessions before the offseason program wraps. The larger drills, the ones where the full offense and defense line up against each other, are off the table until he gets a clean bill of health. He says that clearance is coming — that he expects to be fully available when training camp opens next month.
A month is not forever. But it is the window between a quarterback who is building something with his teammates and one who is watching from the side. Every day of full work missed is a day someone else owns the timing, the rhythm, the feel of a new season taking shape.
The Falcons' summer starts in a matter of weeks. Penix intends to be in it.
