Penix says he's right where he needs to be — the knee has other paperwork still pending
The clearance hasn't come through yet. Michael Penix Jr. is still on the other side of a gate that opens on a doctor's signature, not his own confidence — and his confidence is not the thing anyone is questioning.
Penix is the Atlanta Falcons' quarterback, a player who carries the particular weight of someone the franchise bet on while the previous chapter was still being written. Last season ended with a knee injury, and this offseason his return to practice has been on hold while that knee finishes its own timeline.
Asked about where things stand, Penix didn't hesitate. "Right where I need to be," he told reporters. Whether the medical staff's paperwork agrees is a separate conversation.
That gap — between how a player feels and what a team can officially allow — is one of the stranger places to wait. Penix is doing his part. The rest is out of his hands for now.
Some players shrink in that space. Worth watching to see if Penix fills it.
