Pittsburgh in the spring, San Francisco in the summer — KJ Henry keeps moving
Some players get one shot. KJ Henry is on his second, maybe his third, depending on how you count.
Henry came into the league as a fifth-round pick of the Washington Commanders in 2023 — the kind of draft spot where you arrive with something to prove before you've played a single snap. He spent this past spring with the Pittsburgh Steelers, then found himself back on the market. Now the San Francisco 49ers have signed him after a workout, and he's heading to training camp in Santa Clara.
That's two teams in a few months, two cities, two fresh starts. For a young defensive end still trying to carve out a roster spot, each workout is its own quiet audition.
Landing with the 49ers is a real opportunity. San Francisco runs one of the more demanding defensive fronts in the league, and making a camp roster there means something. Nothing is guaranteed yet — that's the whole point of camp — but Henry is through the door.
The next few weeks will say a lot.
