Seven months after his knee gave out, Mahomes is cleared to practice again

The last time Patrick Mahomes played football at full tilt, it ended on December 14 with a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee. That was seven months ago.

Mahomes is one of the most recognized quarterbacks in the sport — someone who has spent years making the difficult look routine. A knee injury that serious is the kind that sidelines players for the better part of a year, sometimes longer, and changes them in ways that don't always show up until they're back under pressure.

Now he's cleared. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Mahomes has full medical clearance to participate in every part of training camp — the sessions, the reps, all of it. He won't start camp on the list reserved for players physically unable to practice, which for this stage of a recovery from two torn ligaments is a meaningful threshold to clear. Reid added the team will still take it day by day, watching how Mahomes responds.

Mahomes himself called this moment a checkpoint — something he was aiming for, but not the finish line. He said throughout his rehab that being ready for the regular season opener was the real target. Along the way, he sought out Tom Brady, among others, for perspective. That is what seven months of work toward a single goal looks like when the calendar finally catches up to it.

A clearing is a beginning, not a confirmation. But it is the kind of beginning that has Kansas City watching closely.
