No. 13 · 4th season

Stafford steps back, and Bennett gets the floor

The first-string quarterback is sitting out training camp, and that means someone else gets the reps. For the Los Angeles Rams, that someone is Stetson Bennett.

Bennett came to the Rams as a late-round pick who had won a national championship in college, then took a personal leave before joining the team. He has been a project-in-waiting — a player whose ceiling nobody fully knows yet because the snaps have been hard to come by.

With Matthew Stafford resting through camp, Bennett is set to run with the first group in practice. That is not a small thing. Training camp reps are how a quarterback learns the offense at speed, builds trust with the receivers, and makes a case for a bigger role. Ty Simpson is also in the mix, so the job is not handed over — it has to be earned.

For Bennett, this is the window. A quiet summer practice field is where careers quietly shift.
