The Bengals coach says he's never seen a turnaround like this one
There are a handful of ways to be in camp without a contract. You could be a long shot trying to make a roster. Or you could be someone who has something to prove — and who is proving it.
DJ Turner II came into the league as a second-round pick, which is a team betting real money on a player's future. That kind of investment carries weight in both directions: the expectations are real, and so is the fall if things don't go the way anyone planned.
This camp, Turner is back with the Cincinnati Bengals, working without a deal in place. And the head coach — someone who has been around football long enough to have seen a few things — said Turner has made the biggest turnaround he has ever seen a player make. That is not a small thing to say.
Whatever Turner walked through to get here, the person running this team is watching him now and calling it the most dramatic change of direction he has witnessed in a career full of watching players. No contract yet. But a coach on record saying what he sees.
The contract question still has an answer somewhere ahead. What is settled, at least for now, is how Turner is showing up every day.
““This entire journey, he has made the biggest turnaround that I’ve ever seen a player make,” Burks told Bengals.com’s Geoff Hobson.”
