The best quarterback in the world, apparently, is not Patrick Mahomes right now

Rankings are opinions wearing numbers. But when three quarterbacks land above you and a defensive end takes the top spot overall, that's a conversation starter even if nobody expected it to land this way.

Mahomes has spent the better part of a decade as the obvious answer to any question about the best player in football. Multiple championships, MVP awards, the kind of October résumé that teams spend entire front-office careers trying to build against. He became the measuring stick.

This offseason, a few outlets have quietly moved that stick. Prisco's 2026 top 100 list put Myles Garrett — a pass rusher for the Cleveland Browns — at the very top, with three quarterbacks ranked above Mahomes before he even appeared. The ESPYs nominees came out without his name on them either. No single list defines anything, but two in the same window? That's a shift in the weather, however slight.

It may not mean much. It may mean everything about how the football world is starting to re-examine the gap they once took for granted. Mahomes will have an opinion on that soon enough. He usually does.
