Defensive Tackle · Baltimore Ravens
Calais Campbell
No. 93 · 19th season
The Campbell family asked for privacy. The grief behind the request is unimaginable.
There is no way to soften this. On Tuesday, the family of Calais Campbell confirmed that their mother, Nateal Campbell, had died. She was 71. According to reports, Calais's brother Ciarre Campbell has been booked at a jail in Fulton County, Georgia, facing charges of murder, aggravated assault, and weapons possession in connection with her death.
Calais Campbell has spent nearly two decades in the NFL as a defensive lineman — one of the longer careers the league has seen at his position. Through all of it, family has been a visible part of his story. That makes what happened in Georgia this week something no professional context can contain.
The family released a statement Tuesday asking for privacy as they try to find their footing. That is a reasonable thing to ask for. What they are carrying right now goes far beyond football.
There is nothing to predict here, no arc to watch. There is only a family in the middle of something devastating, and a man who will have to figure out how to hold it.
