Cornerback ยท Las Vegas Raiders

Jermod McCoy

No. 28

The knee cost him three rounds. Now training camp is the answer.

There's a version of this story where Jermod McCoy hears his name called on the first night of the draft. That version didn't happen.

McCoy came in considered a first-round talent โ€” the kind of player teams spend the early picks on. Then the medical reports on his surgically repaired knee started circulating, and team after team passed. By the time the fourth round arrived, he was still available.

Now he's with the Las Vegas Raiders, and the organization expects him healthy enough to take on real work when training camp opens. Not a soft landing. Real work.

A three-round slide changes how a player enters a locker room โ€” the expectations, the contract, the room for error. It also has a way of sharpening focus. McCoy hasn't had a chance yet to answer the question his knee created. Training camp is where that starts.

The first-round prospect is still in there somewhere. This summer, we find out if the knee agrees.
