Third punter in, now fighting a rookie to stay
Being the third punter a team turns to in a single season is not exactly the kind of arrival you frame for the wall. But that's where Mitch Wishnowsky landed with the Buffalo Bills in 2025 — the last option, brought in after two others had already come and gone.
Wishnowsky is a punter, which is one of the quieter jobs in football. Most fans couldn't name the punter on their favorite team, and that anonymity is generally the goal. When a team burns through three of them in one season, though, something is clearly off — and Wishnowsky was the one who had to steady it.
Now, with 2026 approaching, he's not easing into the job. There's a rookie waiting. The Bills brought in a young challenger, which means Wishnowsky has to earn the spot that, not long ago, wasn't even supposed to be his.
There's something quietly interesting about a player who arrived as a last resort now having to prove he belongs. The instability that got him here is gone. What's left is a competition.
