Three seasons of losing, and Spears still believes this is the year

Tyjae Spears has watched the Tennessee Titans lose a lot of football games. Three seasons, three losing records — twice finishing 3-14, once at 6-11. That is a lot of long flights home.

Spears hasn't been with the Titans long enough to build much of a public biography, but the record is right there in plain sight. Most players in his position would deflect, hedge, give the press-conference answer. Spears went the other direction. He said — on the record — that the Titans are going to have a winning record this year.

That is a real thing to say out loud after what those last three seasons looked like. It is either conviction or denial, and only one of those ages well.

What it does, at minimum, is put Spears on the record as someone who believes in this team when the evidence has been hard to argue with. That is a kind of bet. The season will tell you whether it was faith or just noise.
