Trey Amos

No. 23 · 2nd season

Trey Amos skipped every spring session — and says he'll be fine by camp

There is a particular kind of quiet that follows a player who misses the whole offseason. Not injured, not suspended — just absent.

Amos is heading into his second year as a cornerback with the Washington Commanders, still working to establish himself at a position where continuity and reps are everything. The spring sessions he skipped — weeks of voluntary practices and then the mandatory team sessions in June — are exactly when a young defensive back tends to sharpen the reads and chemistry that separate someone on the fringe from someone with a real grip on the depth chart.

He did not show up for any of it. Now he is saying the right thing: healthy, ready, training camp is the goal.

The thing about that statement is that it raises the question it is trying to answer. If it was health that kept him away, the spring was lost to something that could not be helped. If the situation is more complicated, then what he is returning to is a competition he stepped back from while everyone else was grinding. Either way, he has a lot of ground to make up in a short window.

Training camp will tell us which version of this story we are actually watching.
