Ward finds Tate in the only spot that matters

Two players who have never played a real game together, and already there is a language between them.

Cam Ward came to Tennessee as the franchise's next chapter at quarterback — a first-round pick expected to carry the offense and, eventually, the whole thing. Carnell Tate arrived as a rookie wide receiver still learning what the professional game asks of him. They are both new here.

In a recent practice rep, Ward dropped a pass into a window so precise that only Tate could reach it. Tate caught it for a touchdown.

That kind of throw does not happen by accident. It asks a quarterback to know exactly where his receiver is going to be — not where he is, where he will be — and to trust him to get there. It asks a receiver to earn that trust fast. Both things happened.

This connection is three months old at most. The number of reps they still need is enormous. But this particular rep looked like something.

#Titans QB Cam Ward puts it in a place where only his new rookie WR Carnell Tate can get it for a TD. I’m pumped for this connection! (📽️ @Titans) https://t.co/G61aSorDm0
