Mac Jones stayed, and he says he'd do it again
There's a version of this offseason where Mac Jones cashes in. He stepped in for Brock Purdy with the San Francisco 49ers last season, held the job down, and waited for the phone to ring. It didn't ring the way he'd hoped.
Jones has been searching for solid ground at quarterback for a few years now — a player trying to find the right situation after his path stopped going the way early promise suggested it would. He didn't get a big payday this spring. What he got was a two-year deal to stay in San Francisco.
He says he has no regrets. That's either a man at peace or a man who has learned something about where he belongs. Maybe both.
The 49ers already have Purdy. Jones knows what that means — he's the backup, the bridge, the guy who steps in when things go sideways. He's been that guy. He's done it. And apparently he's willing to do it again.
The question isn't whether Jones made the right call. It's what he does with the time this deal gives him.
